We could understand collage as a modern art form but also as a creative and playful practice. It’s an art technique of cutting and sticking images together to make a new image or assemblage. We can see collages in the artworks of Pablo Picasso, Hanna Höch and Kurt Schwitters, but before the avant-garde artists many people were already being creative with their scissors and pictures. The subsequent generations of artists and creatives have experimented with many possibilities and materials, including digital manipulation with software.
We will start by understanding the process behind this technique, then we will discuss the variety of materials you can use and we can start the process. Anyone can participate. Whether you are an arts & crafts enthusiast or have no art experience. After a previous guidance on colour theory, visual composition, collage styles and techniques we are going to make a series of collages.
Playing with pictures from old newspapers, magazines or packages we’ll make characters and landscapes never seen on this planet and tell amazing stories with our art. With the registration you get a free drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and some snacks which you can enjoy during the workshop.
In this workshop You’ll be introduced to collage as an art form and learn how to make your own collage for a poster and postcard. At the session we’ll review and discuss modern and contemporary collage artworks and illustrations and learn how to apply some rules of visual composition and colour harmony in your own creative practice.
You will take home:
- Two postcards with your collages.
- One A4 collage made by yourself, so you can proudly hang on the wall.
- A lot of inspiration.
The materials and tools for the workshop will be provided by us: glue, scissors and paper (if you have your favourite tools you can also bring it).
Participants can bring leftover papers from home or work: small cardboard packaging, old magazines and newspapers or even the beautiful blue Belastingdienst envelope!
