Yolima presents Mimicry, a collection of vases made from resin-based material Acrylic One. This is durable man-made material produced by combining a mineral powder-base and a water-based acrylic resin.
This project reconnects Yolima to her roots, to the ocean. She was inspired by the Mimic Octopus. This amazing creature uses mimicry to impersonate other species by changing not only the colours but also the shape and behaviour.
The collection includes 3 vases that mimic other materials in different physical attributes such as colour, texture, and magnetism.
The vases have a particular pattern on the surface resembling the chromatophores, the pigment-containing cells located in the skin of Octopuses. They are responsible for the change in colours, shapes and communication with other members of the species. Each vase is handmade, each vase has unique textures and colours depending on the material that is mimicking.
Yolima embraces the small imperfections that happen during the process, they not only make each piece unique but also revealing beautifully the hand-made origin of each vase.
Yolima is a native art maker, biologist and diver born in Colombia. She lives in Geldrop-NL where she has her small studio..
